Miranda Lopatkin

Miranda Lopatkin

British artist Miranda Lopatkin creates photographic based, multi-layered imagery. Her techniques are largely based around projecting archival slides onto interiors and people, creating new stories. Miranda Lopatkin then rephotographs the images using a mixture of old and new technologies, taking time to produce these stills that appear as if a cross fade from a film.

Recent work is based on a special slide library that was gifted to Miranda Loptakin, and she is focusing on literally breathing new life into the beguiling figures and buildings hidden in the dusty old slides. She projects them on to models and new environments. These sets of work come under the broad banner ‘Time and Place Archive’.

The Family series references old family albums that resonate with many people as she take a trip into the past, although Miranda Lopatkin's work is not entirely nostalgic. Often the settings feel more real than the hazy figures as trees protrude through the bodies and memories become blurred and new narratives emerge.

Miranda Lopatkin is influenced by mythology and folk lore and the way in which stories are passed on through the generations. Through her work Lopatkin creates her own myths and human moments that are preserved in time.

Miranda has an MA in Fine Art from Central Saint Martins, London. Miranda has twice exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery (2011, 2009) and has exhibited internationally, in Berlin, Penang, Athens and Arles and has had solo shows in London. Her work has been shown at the National Portrait Gallery, and alongside artists including Sir Peter Blake, Tracey Emin, Frank Auerbach and Marc Quinn.. Miranda is an artist in residence at the Museum of London’s Learning Programme.
