Kounter Kulture is all about the art, the artists and a sense of discovery - bringing the essence of London’s arts week back to its roots. For those reaching stalemate with the usual suspects at Frieze, the artistic offering at Kounter Kulture provides a welcome relief.

The free art fair, spread across 11,500 square feet of the Truman Brewery offers a variety of artists to fit all tastes, with areas dedicated to Urban Art, Contemporary, Recent Graduates, Chinese Contemporary and the very best from the print world.

Josie McCoy’s solo exhibition features a new series of paintings, based on stills taken from films from as far back as the 1950s, with added references to contemporary 3D movies.

Josie McCoy is interested in the shift from analogue to digital, and uses an old Pentax SLR to take the photos she uses as source material. The paintings include the tell–tale signs of these photos, as well as some of the pixilation of the projected film.

With painting, there is an illusion of depth. In these new works Josie McCoy takes this further by introducing 3D anaglyph imagery. The flashes of red and cyan imply there is another level on which to view the paintings, but really they (and the films they depict) are already referring to something three dimensional in a two dimensional form.

Josie McCoy has chosen older films rather than contemporary ones in order to highlight the impossibility of the truth of the paintings and to emphasise that each one is a depiction/re-creation of a moment in time in our cinematic and personal histories.

Using oil paint like watercolour, she builds up the paintings in thin layers to make the surface glow; an imitation of the cinema screen. The green hue references traditional techniques of painting, where green was used as under-painting to give luminosity to the surface colour.

Josie McCoy graduated from the MA Fine Art course at Central St Martin´s in 1999, and since then has had solo shows in London, Valencia, Newcastle, Milan and Santiago de Compostela and has exhibited in numerous group shows.

Her work has been selected for various competitions and awards including the International Painting Prize of Castellon in 2006 and four times for the BP Portrait Award. She was commended at the Royal West of England Academy Open Painting Exhibition and won the Centre of Attention Painting Prize in 2001. In 2002, she was awarded a Woo Charitable Foundation Arts Bursary.

Josie McCoy’s paintings are in private and public collections including the BBC, Standard Chartered, Collection of University of Wales, The Centre of Attention Permanent Collection, Jeremy Mogford Collection and the Borchard Collection of British Self-Portraits in the 20th Century.

The opening coincides with the Spirit of Stow festival. Stow on the Wold is an enchanting centre of Cotswolds life at any time of year, but never more so than during the festive season. Promising to be a refreshing change from the hustle and bustle of High Street shopping, shops in and around the historic market square will offer a host of Christmas gift ideas, festive fashions, gastronomic delights, one of a kind items, art and antiques. Alongside street entertainment and festive fayre from the pubs, tea rooms and restaurants in the town, Santa will be in the square with a live nativity petting zoo, courtesy of Costwold Farm Park's Adam Henson.
