Dennis Stock

Magnum photographer Dennis Stock began his career as apprentice to Life magazine photographer Gjon Mili, before becoming famous in his own right for exceptional versatility in his field. Stock called himself a ‘colour essayist’, but in his early career produced more subdued work – from the emblematic Times Square portrait of legendary James Dean, to smoky images of jazz musicians in his Jazz Street compilation. These era-defining images won the photographer the prestigious Life’s Young Photographers contest.

Later in his career Stock focused upon the abstraction of flowers, expertly capturing every facet of his floral subjects to produce photographs that were exactly true to life, yet implied the semi-abstract through their hyper realism.
