William Wegman
1943
William Wegman became interested in photography whilst teaching art in California, and with his first dog - Man Ray - began a long and fruitful collaboration. Following quirky photographs of Wegman’s striking Weimaraner, Man Ray was named Man of the Year by the Village Voice in 1982. Meanwhile, the photographer was awarded a Guggenheim fellowship in 1975 and 1986. He also received a National Endowment for the Arts in 1982, and a New York Foundation for the Arts honour in 1987.
With this exceptionally high calibre of recognition, it is clear that Wegman’s success would not stop with Man Ray, and his work is now held in numerous private and public collections - for example, New York’s Whitney Museum and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
