William Claxton

1967

William Claxton

Photojournalist William Claxton grew up haunting local jazz clubs with his camera, and collecting 78’s by Duke Ellington, Lena Horne, Count Basie and Tommy Dorsey, before capturing the world of jazz professionally. Attracted to the innate drama, fun and anxiety of their lives, Claxton wanted to define musicians as people, not just as performers, freezing their most telling moments. Luxury edition book ‘Jazzlife’ provides a look into the world that William has treasured, and ultimately succeeded in immortalising.

Since Claxton started documenting the jazz life, musicians have paid testament to his skill. Shorty Rogers wrote and recorded ‘Clickin’ with Clax’, and Al Cohn followed suit with ‘Sound Claxton!’ In 1990, young sax player Dan St. Marseille asked Claxton if he would photograph him for his first CD. He added that he had little money and probably couldn’t afford him. Claxton agreed to shoot him for only the cost of his materials. This investment in time and effort did indeed pay off, and Dan later composed a tune for the photographer, which he called ‘Claxography’.
