Will Tuck

Will Tuck

Described as simply one of the most exciting emerging artists working within Britain today, former graffiti artist Tuck’s paintings toy with the notion of high and low culture, past and present. In 2005, he completed an MA in painting at the Royal Academy Schools, repositioning his practice away from a graffiti style and towards the large, meticulous and painstakingly time-consuming paintings he produces today. Shortlisted for the 2006 BP Portrait Prize and exhibiting in The National Gallery, Tuck has also exhibited in New York and had solo shows in London and Miami in 2007. Tuck paints entirely by using an airbrush. The paintings focus on classical subject matter and compositions of the past and become a tableaux sprung from cheap plastic toys, accessories and disposable imagery from mass culture. Ultimately, Tuck toys with the idea of being a modern master in a world given to cheap thrills and fast consumption. Although knowing in this sense, his paintings are highly accessible and capable of evoking a smile.
