Artist Tracey Emin was born in London and is famous for her art monoprints, paintings, photography, works in neon as well as installations such as My Bed and Everyone I Have Ever Slept With 1963–1995 (The Tent). Tracey Emin studied fine art at Maidstone College of Art, graduating in 1986, and then went on to the Royal College of Art in London. In 1993 with artist Sarah Lucas she opened The Shop in London’s Brick Lane, selling work by both artists.
Tracey Emin’s art is biographical and is frequently highly confrontational, but is redeemed by its honesty, good humour, self-awareness, poetry and ultimate innocence. Although she deals relentlessly with the minutiae of her own life she touches largely on issues that are common to all, not least sexuality, mortality, and the creation of meaning in life. Tracey Emin’s ability to integrate her work and personal life enables Emin to establish an intimacy with the viewer.
Tracey Emin was famously nominated for the Turner Prize in 1999 with her work My Bed at the Tate Gallery. In 2007 she was made a Royal Academician, and represented Britain at the Venice Biennale in the same year. In July 1999, at the height of Tracey Emin's Turner Prize fame, the artist created a number of monoprint drawings inspired by the public and private life of Princess Diana for a themed exhibition called Temple of Diana.
Emin’s first solo exhibition was in 1994 in London and was entitled My Major Retrospective and in May 2011 Tracey Emin had a retrospective of work called Love is What You Want at London’s Hayward Gallery. Emin has exhibited internationally with solo and group exhibitions in cities such as London, New York, Beverly Hills California, Rome, Paris and Sydney. Celebrities and musicians who support Tracy Emin's art include Madonna, David Bowie, Orlando Bloom, Ronnie Wood, Jerry Hall and Naomi Campbell.
