Tanja Boukal

1976

Artist Tanja Boukal lives and works in Vienna, Austria and creates wool and tapestry artworks as well as sculptures and photography. She has exhibited extensively in countries including Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Czech Republic, Tenerife as well as in New York, Miami, Moscow and Barcelona.  In 2002 Tanja Boukal had a scholarship at the International Summer Academy for Fine Arts in Salzburg, Austria and from 2003 to 2004 was the artist in residence at Centre d' Arte Contemporani Piramidon, Barcelona, Spain.

For Tanja Boukal inspiration lurks everywhere. Items as diverse as a TV news report on a war that should make her feel safer or a song like Money Makes The World Go Round playing on the radio can be starting points for her creative work. Social developments are one point of departure; herself and her social interaction are the other.

Tanja Boukal hates the narrow-minded hypocrisy that dominates the propaganda of the ‘league of extraordinary gentlemen’ all over the world. They speak of safety and progress, yet disseminate angst in order to justify their deadly policies of war and greed. The gap between propaganda and reality is the fertile ground for her work.

Tanja Boukal is well known for her Those In Darkness Drop From Sight series which is illusion knitting on aluminium pieces. These works are a portrait series of women in armed conflicts where women are not only victims but actively present. Mostly it is shown how women protest quietly and men let the fists do the talking..., but is this reality? By the technology of ‘shadowknitting’ Boukal creates original portraits, as from the front only black and white stripes are seen, hiding black and white images which are only viewable from the side. The women can be seen only from an adequate viewing angle, so that they are, like a ghost hand, sometimes visible and mostly disappeared.

All that Glitter and Gold and Hanging by a Thread are series which take as their central theme refugees in Europe. All that Glitter and Gold is a series of seven works comprising wool knitted onto wooden frames, and depict scenes from the daily lives of refugees from different cities including Athens and Munich. Hanging by a Thread is a group of stitched pictures which translate the dramatic procedure of refugees sailing in unfeasible boats to reach ‘the golden shore’. These images are taken from newspaper cuttings (all from 2008 - 2009) and are stiched pixel by pixel - taking approximately 200 hours of intense work per picture - as small icons of human despair.
