Sue Moffitt was born in Corbridge, Northumberland and grew up on a large dairy farm. Her family has farmed for generations, originating from Hunday Farm, near Workington, Cumbria and her grandfather established the now famous Hunday Herd of Holstein Friesians.
Sue’s father John Moffitt was a pioneer in agricultural circles, and was awarded a CBE for services to agriculture. A true entrepreneur, established, amongst many things, the National Countryside Museum, based in Northumberland. Sue ran a small business hand painting on china, hand painting bespoke murals on tiles for bathrooms and kitchens and murals for nurseries from a studio within the museum.
Her brother Peter now farms the family farm, and also runs a farm shop and tea room processing and selling his own yogurt and ice cream from the small herd of Brown Swiss cows he has recently established.
Sue Moffitt won the Entrepreneur of the Year award in the Northumberland Business Awards in 2008 and has recently been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
Moffitt has painted all her life, but professionally for the last ten years, and her work is now exhibited selected galleries around the UK. The demand for her unique portraits has spread around the UK and internationally.
During her Fine Art degree at Sunderland University she worked with other mediums including installation and video, and was shortlisted for the Barker and Stonehouse Art Prize in 2003. However it is painting that is her passion, the strong bond with dairy farming is so rooted in her psyche that she has continued to paint cows for the last 10 years, and it is her unique insight into these animals that has gained her recognition nationwide.
