Stuart Semple

Bournemouth born Stuart Semple uses his art to dive headlong into the world of popular culture, he is best known for his canvases in which he borrows and subverts an array of heavily loaded iconic images from film, music and TV. The work is acerbic, yet intimately personal and slick, yet retaining a sense of spontaneity.  Semple believes that popular culture is the most efficient language for any meaningful communication, creating proud artistic landscapes by culling from the legends of his own past as well as the flotsam and jetsam of our collective pop cultural seas.

Semple is no stranger to media exposure, hitting the headlines in 2005 when he snuck his own British Painting Still Rocks canvas into a Saatchi show and more recently for his 1.5 million contribution to a bidding war for an island in Poole Harbour. Whilst it may have been such antics that initially caught the attention of celebrity collectors such as Debbie Harry, Johnny Depp and Boy George, his reputation as one the most interesting British artists in recent times is deserved as his artwork is as complex and intriguing as the man himself.

Over the past few years, Semple has addressed the ever-increasing demand for his work and has expanded his artistic output by establishing Stuart Semple Industies, a company comprised of variously talented individuals with Semple at the creative helm. Whilst parallels between the Warholian Factory clearly exist, Semples enthusiastic embrace of all creative avenues and mediums separates him from his predecessors.

Despite this unprecedented level of attention, Semple remains an enigmatic character. His success is certain to continue gathering momentum and reach stratospheric heights in the not distant future.
