Steven Gregory

Steven Gregory is a sculptor and master craftsman who engages in things that are truly human such as life and death, immortalising and adorning human bones and skulls in precious and semi precious stones in order to beautify the human condition. With irony and humour Gregory brings the dead back to life leaving us with iconic warriors who have not only gone the extra mile but finished the journey.
South African born Gregory is a bit of a maverick, and when he entered Saint Martins College of Art in 1970 he developed such a strong dislike to its teaching that he left after two years. Gregory's determination to engage with tools and to learn traditional craftsman's skills led him to become an apprentice stonemason, in which capacity he worked on Westminster Abbey, Hampton Court, and other historic building projects. After winning the Worshipful Company of Masons Prize in 1977, Gregory felt he was ready to re-engage with Saint Martins on his own terms, so went back and completed his BA.
Gregory's unique style and take on life has lead to acclaimed exhibitions in London, New York and Venice. In 2007 he was included in the important exhibition 'In the darkest hour there may be light: works from Damien Hirst's murderme collection'. He is also a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibitions in London.
