Steve McCurry has achieved universal recognition for his evocative colour photography. Using the documentary tradition, McCurry is a sort of photojournalist, constantly crossing boundaries in his quest to capture the essence of human struggle and joy. His talent has earned him membership since 1986 of prestigious agency Magnum – who can name photography’s most outstanding talent, such as Marc Riboud, Elliott Erwitt and Rene Burri as clients.
McCurry possesses an innate curiosity and sense of wonder about the world, which drives his search to find the unforgettable - learning on the way a need for a patience to obtain the sincerity so integral to his images: ‘If you wait, people would forget your camera and the soul would drift up into view’ explains the photographer. In ‘Bombay, India’, there is a lucid familiarity which defies cultural difference - this typifies McCurry’s style, which he explains attempts to capture ‘a person caught in a broader landscape, that you could call the human condition.’
Steve had a risky start to his career when, disguised in native garb, he crossed the Pakistan border into rebel controlled Afganistan just before the Russian invasion. He emerged with rolls of film sewn into his clothes, holding images which would be published internationally as among the first to chart this conflict. Since this brave debut, he has achieved a Rapa Gold Capa Medal for Best Photographic Recording from Abroad, as well as awarded recognition by the National Press Photographer’s Association.
