Shu Yong has established an international reputation for his rich, lushly coloured ‘bubble’ paintings and sculpture. He has attracted controversy throughout his career. In Bubble Woman the artist uses his ubiquitous bubbles to create a grossly distorted sculpture, portraying one of the most important characteristics of the female body as objects of seemingly limitless lust and power. Shu Yong frequently references Chinese myth in his work. As Ai Weiwei said ‘Shu Yong and his unspectacular bubbles are as much medium, style, concept and method. They stand for traditional Chinese mythology that leads us to our present time making new experiences and views possible. These experiences seem to impose a riddle to a Westerner's view: inscrutable China, inscrutable mythology. It is indeed this very mysteriousness that gives China its mystical and splendid charm’. The artist lives and works in Beijing and has shown widely, with solo and group exhibitions in Beijing, Lucerne and Berlin, and has participated in international art fairs in Shanghai, Hong Kong and London.
In 2009 Shu Yong was invited as an honor guest to the Florence Biennale, and asked to show paintings from his Chinese Myths series.
Other Chinese Contemporary artists exhibiting with Opus include Piao GuangXie, Shi LiFeng, Chen QuiChi, Lv Shun, Liu XinTao, Bai Tao, Han XuCheng, Jin Yu and Wang ZhiJie.
