Brazil born Sebastiao Salgado is arguably the most important documentary photographer working today. His images are photographs through the lens of a humanist: the universal subject of his work is a human dignity and perseverance. Salgado records those under duress, in extreme poverty, in exile or at work – like these Sugarcane Cutters - allowing his images to convey a powerful narrative.
Following a formal education in economics, Sebastiao turned to a career as a freelance photographer, then joined the Gamma Agency, before moving to Magnum for a period of 15 years. In 1994 he left Magnum to set up his own representative agency, Amazonas Images, and today continues to produce his black and white images - characteristically realistic yet sympathetic.
