Artist and photographer Rob Carter's Travelling Still series evokes the feeling of movement in a still image as if taken from the side window of a driving vehicle, an effect achieved by using a revolving lens camera and long exposures. It took Rob Carter over five years to collect the work on his travels in destinations from the bright lights of Vegas, Tokyo and Hong Kong to the tulip fields of Holland and seascapes around the world.
The Travelling Still series is all about creating the feeling of movement within a still image and attempts to convey the experience of travelling itself. They stretch the 'moment' both literally - in that the camera shutter is held open - and visually, as the details of the subject blur out horizontally. This sense of movement is created 'in camera' on to film, with no digital intervention, and images are subsequently printed directly from the original transparency onto Cibachrome paper.
Rob Carter has been a fine art photographer since 1993. He is more commonly known as one half of Rob & Nick Carter, a duo who have been described as ‘the next big thing’ by The Sunday Times and boast Elton John, David and Victoria Beckham and Matthew Williamson as collectors of their work.
Rob Carter appeared in BBC2's acclaimed documentary show The Apprentice in 2005. He was awarded the silver medal in the Royal Photographic Society's International Print Exhibition in 2005 with Travelling Still, Sugar Sugar Beach, Barbados, and the bronze medal in 2003 for Travelling Still, Brighton Beach. Rob Carter was also nominated for awards with Creative Review and the Photography Masters Cup.
The Travelling Still series by Rob Carter has featured in numerous publications including The Independent Magazine, Ag Magazine, Scotsman Review, Benetti Magazine and Grand Design Magazine.
