Richard Misrach

1949

Artist Richard Misrach is an American photographer known for his photography of human intervention in landscapes and is one of the most influential photographers of his generation. In the 1970s, he helped pioneer the renaissance of colour photography and large-scale presentation that are in widespread practice today. Some of Richard Misrach’s best known artworks and books include On the Beach, Golden Gate, Bravo 20: The Bombing of the American West, Violent Legacies, Crimes and Splendors, Desert Cantos, The Sky Book and Destroy This Memory an affecting reminder of the physical and psychological impact of Hurricane Katrina on New Orleans.

Richard Misrach first started photographing with a 35mm camera but since the late 1970s he has photographed using an 8x10 camera and colour film. Richard Misrach's first work, Telegraph 3 AM, was taken whilst he was a student at Berkeley University and was intended to be a social statement as it consisted of gritty, documentary style images of homeless people around the Berkeley campus.

Richard Misrach's photography is sometimes referred to as cultural landscape photography as it shows human intervention in the landscape. His major work, Desert Cantos series began in 1979 and takes its name from the word for a section of a larger poem, canto, and each canto of his series is named for the area shown.

Misrach's work has been exhibited throughout the world and is held in many museum collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Museum of Modern Art in New York, Center National d'Art at de Culture Georges Pompidou in Paris, The Art Institute of Chicago, National Museum of American Art in Washington, DC and Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Art in Japan. In 2010, on the five-year anniversary of hurricane Katrina, the exhibition Untitled [New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, 2005] made its debut at the New Orleans Museum of Art which has been exhibited at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

Richard Misrach has won numerous awards including four National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships and a Guggenheim Fellowship. In 2002 he was given the Kulturpreis for Lifetime Achievement in Photography by the German Society for Photography, and in 2008 the Lucie Award for Outstanding Achievement in Fine Art Photography.
