Natalie Tkachuk

Natalie Tkachuk graduated in 2004 with a 1st in BA Hons Photography from University College Falmouth, Cornwall, UK. Her photographic work is concerned with the recurring themes of time, memory, death, beauty, and the lost and the forgotten. Natalie Tkachuk tries to find beauty in the everyday and the forgotten and one of her main focuses is the aesthetics of the work, and the mysterious ways beauty is found in a photograph.

Natalie Tkachuk photographs Still Life objects that are left behind from strangers' lives. She collects these objects from various sources ranging from junk shops to eBay and shoots them on a large format camera using transparency film. Natalie Tkachuk gives these once private objects an importance; memorialising them, making them everlasting so they become a shrine to the lost and forgotten, looking at the traces we all leave behind.

Natalie Tkachuk’s body of work Traces consists of images of old books and letters. Taken from house clearances they represent lost and forgotten traces of memory and time. They are artefacts left by strangers, snippets of life lost. The images suggest an absence and a presence, the absence of the owner and their presence as a photographic object. Natalie Tkachuk feels the power of her work lies in what is not revealed, allowing the viewer to use their own experiences to relate to them. Her photographic approach is based on a high gloss appearance where movement and time is captured like a fashion shoot.

Natalie Tkachuk has exhibited her work with galleries in London, Bath and Cornwall. In 2007 she won the Nikon Discovery Award, and in 2009 was the winner in the Still Life category at the Signature Photography Awards.
