Illustration graduate Matthew Small's work is raw and urban. Painting directly onto found pieces of metal he brings the physical elements of the city directly into his work. The subjects of his portraits are filmed in and around London without their knowledge.
Working like this Small bypasses the staged element of portraiture, with the identity of the sitter becoming of lesser importance than the work itself. With a strong paint quality Small's approach gives the subject of portraiture an abstract and fresh feel.
Small has been nominated for a number of awards including the BP Portrait prize and Hunting Prize.
