Polychromos colour pencil on paper
Signed by the artist
Mark Braithwaite was born in York and attended Bradford University studying film editing and camerawork however art was always his dream. After leaving University he became a pavement artist, painting outside York Minster. He taught himself to paint by copying the Old Masters, especially the Baroque and Impressionist movements. Braithwaite opened his first gallery in York in 2000, expanding to larger premises 2 years later.
Braithwaite paints landscapes and cityscapes in oil, acrylic, watercolour or pastel. A fascination with the fast disappearing red telephone box led to his painting the Lost Connection series which received acclaim in the national press. His style has developed and is recognisable for its intense light and shadow in fine pencil sketches and vibrant colour in oil on canvas.
One of his figurative pieces was shortlisted for Canon and Art Business Today magazine's annual art competition, and was exhibited by Canon in London in 2007. In 2008 he was invited by the owners of the stately home, Newby Hall (location of recent film Mansfield Park) to produce a series of figurative drawings and paintings featuring the fantastic backdrop of the Hall. This work was exhibited in the Hall as a one man show in March and April 2008.
Braithwaite was the cover artist for the prestigious Artists & Illustrators magazine in 2010 and the resulting photographs and interview formed a feature entitled Great British Landscapes in the May 2010 edition.
Braithwaite was also elected as an artist member of the Fine Art Trade Guild in 2002.
He has been chosen twice as a Regimental artist for the British Army, for the Signal Regiment and for the Royal Artillery. His army work hangs in the public collection of the Guildhall in York, in the Officers Mess of Imphal Barracks, in the Sergeants Mess of 12 Regt RA, Paderborn, Germany and the Signals Regimental Museum in Blandford, Dorset. Other corporate clients have included Ampleforth College, Nestlé UK, Deloitte UK, Artko and GMB Union as well a commission for celebrity astrologer Jonathan Cainer.
