Raised in Cheyenne, Wyoming, Lisa Eisner moved to New York City in 1979. She's been a fashion editor at Mademoiselle Magazine, and at American Vogue, where she was European Editor in Paris and later West Coast Editor in Los Angeles. After more than 15 years in the fashion business she decided to focus on her own photography and interest in subcultures and ceremonies.
Published in 2000 the book Rodeo Girls represents Eiser’s fascination with rodeo queens which developed when she was a child growing up who saw these woman as glamorous icons. Her photography ranges from monochrome images displaying perfect timing of serious photojournalism, to informal full-length portraits whose saturated colours and glamour reveal Eisner's fashion editor's eye for detail. The clichés of American history are here glossed and represented; the 'Stars and Stripes' pops up repeatedly on shirts and wrapped around horses, while the leather chaps and tassels of cowboy style are reinvented as stylish and precisely orchestrated fashion statements.
In 1999 she co-founded Greybull Press in order to publish beautifully crafted art and photography books by artists as varied as R. Crumb, Richard Prince, and Dennis Hopper. Lisa Eisner has contributed to W Magazine, French Vogue, Pop Magazine, New York Times Magazine, Vanity Fair, Travel & Leisure and Harpers Bazaar.
