Leni Riefenstahl

1902-2003

Leni Riefenstahl

Leni Riefenstahl was born in Berlin in 1902. She studied painting and started her artistic career as a dancer. A knee injury put an end to her sensational career, and she went on to become world famous as an actress, film director, film producer and reporter.  As a photographer, too, she soon gained the world's elite after the war. Photo reportages about her stay with the Nuba were first published in The Sunday Times Magazine, Paris Match, L'Europeo, Newsweek and The Sun . Her illustrated books The Nuba and The Nuba of Kau earned her further honours and awards.

When she was in her early sixties, Riefenstahl began frequently visiting the African continent, where she has worked on various film and photography projects over the last half century. Her favorite destination was Sudan, where she lived with and photographed the

Nuba tribe people, learning their language and becoming their friend. The Nuba were loving and peaceful people who welcomed Riefenstahl as one of their own.

In 1987, Leni Riefenstahl Memoirs were published; exhibitions of her photographs have been held internationally including Tokyo, Finland, Milan and Rome. Leni Riefenstahl died in September 2003 in Germany, a few weeks after her 101st birthday.

Her beautiful, skilled photographs represent a landmark in the extraordinary career of the 20th century's most unforgettable artistic pioneer.
