Lee Krasner

1908-1984

Lee Krasner is one of the foremost abstract artists of her generation. She is associated with the American Abstract Artists, showed her paintings in the group exhibitions, and rapidly became known as a younger-generation modernist. Being with Jackson Pollock, they influenced each other in their artistic career development. The instinctive nature of Pollock's approach helped free Krasner's art from formalist strictures, while her sensitive eye and keen judgement as well as her dedication to promoting Pollock’s career helped him to great success. Her deep admiration for Matisse and Mondrian’s composition underpin her works. Matisse in particular was a life-long source of inspiration for her. Krasner’s invariable efforts to improve her work by reworking previous paintings, sometimes destroying whole bodies of work, led to Krasner's beautiful collage paintings, which brought flattering attention in the New York art world in the mid 1950s.

Following major solo exhibitions, including a retrospective at the Whitechapel Gallery in London (1965) and ‘Lee Krasner: Large Paintings,’ at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (1973), she achieved recognition for her own contributions to modern American art.
