Laurie Hogin's work prominently features animals and her paintings are to be viewed as social commentaries on 21st century ideals of economy, identity and culture, whilst also mimicing that of Dutch still life paintings, in colour, contents and atmosphere. The paintings parody the commerciality of art itself, her works ask the viewer questions on artistic formula and taxonomy of product. In addition to the allegory of Hogin's art, in her monkey portraits she gives the monkey featured a paintbrush, to comment on the role of the artist in society.
Laurie Hogin grew up in Conneticut, America. She attended Cornell University in Ithaca, New York where she studied studio art and cultural anthropology. She is currently working as an associate Professor and Chair of the Painting/ Sculpture Program at the University of Illinois. Although her artwork takes her mainly to Chicago and New York, Laurie Hogin exhibits solely and in groups all over the world, with the most prestigous galleries. Laurie Hogin is critiqued on regular occasions, by the likes of Art in America and Art Forum. However, this is just the tip of the iceberg for Laurie's renowed reputation.
