Judy Ragagli

Los Angeles based Judy Ragagli’s creates hyper real images of vintage Barbie dolls in oils on canvas, and the artist describes these as an homage to a surviving icon of modernity and femininity. Ragagli believes Barbie represents and contains knowledge of culture and society, and is more significant than an object for child’s play.

Ragagli studied under the artist Paul Bedard for an intensive five-year period, and the very first canvas she produced was a portrait of Barbie; a subject she would later assume as her primary focus. In order to achieve accurate tonal properties of the flesh-coloured plastic Ragagli mixes her own oil colours. The effect of her process and style culminates in a cohesive vision of of this much-loved doll, and the artist’s own commentary on the significance of this American icon.

Judy Ragagli has shown widely throughout the United States, with recent exhibitions in Malibu, Seattle, San Diego and Portland.
