Joanna Hutton's contemporary installations incorporate an avian element. She is fascinated by the symbolism, traditions, superstitions and folklore surrounding birds, and in particular the belief that they carry the souls of the dead. Her longstanding interest in natural structures and form is evidenced with the incorporation of natural material and found objects into her work.
After a spontaneous visit to a taxidermist Hutton wanted to learn this skill herself and is now a member of the Guild of Taxidermists. She enjoys the opportunity to examine these creatures more closely when they are so often beyond our reach. Her work affords dignity to the preserved birds and their inherent beauty is evident but there is also an undercurrent, a disconcerting element which demands respect.
Joanna Hutton graduated from Newcastle College with a Foundation Degree in Fine Art Practice in July 2011 and will complete her BA (Hons) Fine Art at Northumbria University in 2012.
Joanna Hutton has exhibited widely in the North East with solo and group exhibitions in Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland and Yorkshire. In 2008 Hutton was awarded the Newcastle Journal Culture Club’s Ceramics Masterclass, and in 2009 was the winner of the Newcastle Journal/Lloyds TSB 'Spirit of the North' award.
Joanna Hutton lives in Hexham, Northumberland.
