American contemporary conceptual artist and sculptor Jeff Koons embraces kitsch imagery and pop material culture. He is best-known for his oversize sculptures, such as the giant 10 ft Balloon Dogs and the now iconic 43 ft flower composition Puppy, exhibited at Bad Arolsen in Germany, The Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney, The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and the Rockefeller Centre in New York.
Koons became professionally and personally prominent during the 1980s. During this time he established a Warhol-esque Factory studio in SoHo, assistants being directed by this self proclaimed “ideas man”. His work has repeatedly been the subject of controversy, not least Made In Heaven, sexually explicit paintings, photographs and sculptures of himself and then wife Ilona Staller.
Koons retains his dominance in the artworld and the momentum generated in the 80s, with prominent artists such as Damien Hirst citing him as a major influence. In 2007 Sotheby’s sold Koons’ Hanging Heart for $23.6 million, making it the most expensive piece by a living artist sold at auction. Buyers Gagosian Gallery had also previously purchased Koons’ work including the $11.8 million Diamond (Blue) at a Christie’s sale.
His work has been the subject of many exhibitions both in Europe and United States, including solo exhibitions at the Sonnabend Gallery, New York (1999) and the Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao, Spain (1997); with major museum retrospectives held by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (1992) and the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (1992),
