Jeanloup Sieff began his career in black and white photography, after giving up the idea of working in cinema, and is a former member of Magnum photography agency. Sieff worked at Elle magazine in Paris, before relocating to New York in 1961 to further his commercial experience at fashion magazines Vogue, Glamour, Esquire and Harper’s Bazaar.
Jeanloup’s most famous photographs are his images of nudes and dancers, although he has deviated from these – for example with his striking 1977 Death Valley landscape series. Despite his background in fashion, Sieff’s trademark style is beauty with an edge – he implies a sense of psychological doubt or upset inside his immaculate images.
