James Turrell deals with explorations in light and space that speak to his viewers without words, with the tangible force of an awakening. His studies in perceptual and orbital psychology are evident as he attempts to ‘create an atmosphere that can be consciously plumbed with seeing, like the wordless thought that comes from looking in a fire.’ Turrell’s ability to place viewers in a realm of true experience has been praised internationally, with the artist winning a number of awards – including Guggenheim and MacArthur fellowships.
Living and working in Arizona, Turrell’s current project involves transforming Roden Crater – an extinct volcano – into a massive celestial observatory. Luxury edition book Eclipse charts another exceptional project of James’ – his making of a ‘skyscape’ back in 1999 to view the total eclipse seen in England – and provides a real insight into the work of an inspired man who is trying to destroy the artificiality of looking at art, through an epiphany in the process of perception.
