Hans Namuth

1917-1990

Hans Namuth

Hans Namuth was arrested early in his career for distributing anti-Hitler leaflets, in 1933. When released he went to Paris and met Robert Capa and Georg Reisner. He covered the Spanish Civil War with Capa for two years, and escaped from war torn Europe to New York in 1940.

In New York he met Richard Avedon and Irving Penn at Brodovitchs Design Laboratory, where he first heard about a Jackson Pollock exhibition at the Betty Parsons Gallery. He disliked Pollocks paintings at first, but when he met him later at an East Hampton group show and asked if he could photograph the artist in his studio, a normally reluctant Jackson Pollock agreed. Hans Namuth photographed Pollock from June to November 1950, and the sessions forever altered Pollocks place in the publics imagination.

Pollock and his wife Lee Krasner introduced Namuth to other painters of the day, and he went on to photograph Joseph Cornell, Edward Hopper, Jasper Johns, Robert Motherwell, Andy Warhol, Mark Rothko and Willem de Kooning. He has exhibited in New York and Paris.
