Turner Prize winner Grayson Perry has previously been known for his ceramic works, having studied pottery in an evening class at Portsmouth Polytechnic. Here, however, Perry chooses the rarely used medium of embroidery to create the ironic and satirical ‘Love Plane’, on duchess satin. Pink flower explosions surround the fighter plane and purple hearts on the wings allude to the Vietnam war.
Perry’s work may appear traditional, but beyond the pastel colours are undertones of war, and the suggestive title of the needlework connotes the phallic. This peculiar antagonism is typical of the unconventional artist, who pursued a speciality in clay primarily because ‘it is held in such low esteem in the art world’, and can name heavily embroidered clothing for his cross-dressing alter ego ‘Claire’ amongst his works.
