Elliott Erwitt

1928

Elliott Erwitt

One of the finest black and white photographers of his generation and a member of the prestigious Magnum photography agency since 1954, Elliott Erwitt’s camera has taken him around the globe - from Fifth Avenue, to Valencia, to Paris - since the 1940s. Erwitt has had Marilyn Monroe in front of his lens in New York, and sprung to fame with a shot of the 1959 Khruschev/Nixon debate. Despite boasting such renowned subjects, some of Erwitt’s best images are those of daily life, such as a pet dog in Ireland, or his endearing depiction of rural Provence.

His iconic images have been the subject of several books and exhibitions worldwide, including a solo show at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Elliott Erwitt describes himself as a professional photographer by trade and an amateur photographer by vocation, and with unmistakable style and wit, his work has captured the famous and the ordinary, the strange and the mundane, for more than half a century. His luxury edition book (Elliott Erwitt Snaps) is a wonderful overview of his diverse portfolio.
