Edward Monovich

The controversial Edward Monovich lives in New Jersey, and exhibits in New York and Texas. He attended the University of Texas where he mastered Fine Art and painting. Monovich produces paintings and drawings that address the issues and politics of contemporary society through familiar Disney iconography. His work questions national identity and western privilege, pondering on the existence of necessary violence in today’s world. Using Winnie-the-Pooh, Strawberry Shortcake and G.I. Joe, Edward juxtaposes the innocent world of the childhood storybook with the militia.

It is difficult to place Monovich within a certain genre; despite the harsh reality in his work, there is a distinctive dreamlike quality that is derived from his surreal combinations of subjects. Whilst the artist’s work is saturated with messages that he intends the viewer to read, one does not need prerequisite knowledge to engage with Monovich’s work: he presents a clear truth, in the language of the cultural.
