David LaChapelle
1963
David LaChapelle has been labelled the ‘Fellini of photography’ – and is famed for his celebrity portraiture. Amongst LaChapelle’s subjects are Britney Spears, Elizabeth Taylor, David Beckham and Pamela Anderson, and his images have been widely featured in the magazine world – with photographs in Vogue, Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone and i-D. American Photo magazine listed David among the ten most important people in photography, and his luxury edition Artists and Prostitutes book is a unique collection of some of his most beautiful work.
Andy Warhol recognised LaChapelle's talent, offering him his first job, whilst he was still at high school. Now famous in his own name, his work has been exhibited internationally – from New York, to Amsterdam, to the Barbican Museum in London, where his show became the most attended in the museum’s history. The innovative photographer has also turned his hand to music videos, theatrical events and documentary films. Amongst his directing credits are videos for Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, The Vines and No Doubt – whose ‘In My Life’ video won MTV’s Best Pop Video award. David’s work continues to be inspired by everything from art history to pornography, creating both a record and a mirror of all facets of popular culture today.
