David Harrison is attracted to the everyday oddities that we mostly overlook – which inspire his paintings, populated by fantastical characters in eerie settings. Traditional mythical subjects remind the viewer of familiar fairytales, although with a darker, more sinister side; in Harrison’s scenes, the divide between natural and supernatural is strangely merged. The artist’s past work has been influenced by Alice in Wonderland, The Master and Margarita, and the short stories and poems of Ukrainian writer Gogol.
Harrison’s 'Life after Death' skull seems a long way from the fairytale, but is typical of Harrison’s concern with the belighted urban decay of humanity, and a rather bleak view of the vanity and foolishness of mankind, albeit tinged with mystery and wonder.
