Claire Brassil

Claire Brassil

Claire Brassil uses a combination of media in her pieces, including coloured pencil, graphite and gouache, creating the sense of opposition that makes her work so powerful. This contrast within her pieces hints at the vague and disrupted coherance of reconstructive memory. Brassil’s work invites interpretation: it can seem childlike in its lack of sync, or haunted by an absence of continuity. The artist lives and works in Brooklyn, New York, and was a key participator in the Supporting Women Artists Project.

Claire’s images are punctuated by figures who seem vulnerable yet guilty, staring at and confronting the viewer. This creates scenarios that – despite their sense of melancholy – are psychologically charged.
