Christo and Jeanne-Claude

Married couple Christo and Jeanne-Claude create environmental installation art, having collaborated since 1961. Amongst their past projects are Wrapped Coast (Australia), The Pont Neuf Wrapped (Paris), The Umbrellas (Japan) and Wrapped Reichstag (Berlin). Documented in this luxury edition book is the couple’s project ‘The Gates’ – centering around New York’s Central Park.
Following conception of the project in 1979, its installation was rejected in 1981, but approved over twenty years later, in 2003. Finished in February 2005, the work consisted of 7503 16ft gates with panels of saffron fabric stretching for 23 miles of the park. The pair financed the project entirely, creating the illusion of a saffron flowing river, which provided a highly unique experience for the locals and visitors to remember who were lucky enough to pass through the park during its sixteen day period.
