Wooden chest of drawers with plastic children's toys, glass, fabric, emulsion and pearl paint, lights, crystals and mixed media
Signed by the artist
The essence of Charlotte Stubbs’ work stems from her love of objects and collecting. These primarily include old, worn or unwanted objects which emanate a sense of history or feeling of nostalgia. Stubbs’ then takes these objects and alters them, whether it be dissecting them to create new forms, or crystallising them to create miniature dioramas of bizarre and alternate realities. These strange worlds often touch upon the uncanny, as they are both familiar yet disturbingly out of place. Charlotte Stubbs’ work has a melancholic yet beautiful feel, which takes direct influence from her own personal bitter sweet experiences of life, with which we all share.
It is important to Charlotte Stubbs’ that the imaginary worlds she creates fully immerse the viewer. Often this means using lighting and sound to create a more dramatic atmosphere that borders on the theatrical, often sharing the wonder that is found in children’s fantasy novels such as Alice in Wonderland and The Chronicles of Narnia. Photography and miniature sculptures are also key components within her practice and are often created alongside larger installations. These help Charlotte Stubbs’ to explore the different elements of her work and although they are by products of a process, they stand alone as pieces in their own right, sharing the same important essence and themes.
Charlotte Stubbs graduated in 2011 with a BA (Hons) Fine Art degree from Newcastle University.
