Caroline List

Caroline List's is renowned for her unique sensitive approach to landscapes painting, however her work is not depicting a traditional idyllic scene but she invites the imagination to roam her emotive worlds.

The paintings suggest displaced natural habitats, where nature and the elements are transforming and exploring shifting patterns in nature where nature’s seasonal changes are becoming increasingly unsettled and displaced. Our experience of an idyllic view of nature is continually under threat, as the force of nature takes hold encroaching on manmade developments.

The paintings stem from source material gathered from a number of different sources and locations. These images have been visually re-assembled to re-create fictional views. The saturated colour explores the visual pleasure of the picturesque and beauty in nature, whilst the painterly pouring and the material coagulations refer to an elemental collision of disparate natural worlds. Some of the works mix tonal black and white trace of the photographic emulsion which signify the dark unknown mysteries within landscape, creating an uncanny mist, that hark back to places of memory and time. Whilst this gives them a sense of authenticity the viewer is still left within a fake illusion.

The images appear to exist only in memory, distorted by fantasy. It is this part real; part imagined quality that List wants to capture in the paintings, creating journeys into the sublime, a desire for a sense of place which hovers between fact and fiction.

Since graduating from an MA in painting at Chelsea School art Caroline List has exhibited in London, New York, Toronto and Paris. She has curated a number of successful exhibitions in the contemporary London art scene and her work has been purchased by a number of collections such as The Contemporary Arts society, Neuberger and Berman collection New York, Fidelity Financial, Lord & Lady Milbank and a number of other private collectors.
