Bettina Rheims
1952
French Bettina Rheims is widely regarded as an international star in erotic photography, famed for her seductive portraits of women. Starting her photography career in the late 1970s with photographs of striptease and circus artists, Rheims now focuses upon Parisian models she finds in her city – a spontaneity of choice which has resulted in comparisons with the late Diane Arbus. The images here are taken from Bettina’s famous ‘X’mas Series’ – a collection of photographs featuring young women, still shy of their seductive power.
Rheims' photography has been exhibited extensively: at the Centre Pompidou in her native Paris, and in solo exhibitions worldwide, in Tokyo, Austria, Milan, Berlin and Sydney.
