Anoushka Fisz
1969
In the late 1980s Anoushka Fisz was apprentice to portrait photographer Plichta, who worked in 1950s Hollywood. 'It's Killing Me' - her series of black and white photographs presented here - has been described as a final exorcicm of Anoushka’s Polish immigrant father’s nightmares and subsequent death, and Fisz’s resulting period of distress. Strikingly powerful, Damien Hirst has commented that ‘Anoushka’s pictures seem to say and deny something elusive but important all at the same time’ and the artist herself admits ‘photography is my only way of exorcising my demons, fears and anxieties.’
Influenced by her time with Plichta, Fisz’s work is infused with the dramatic sensibilities of classic Hollywood portraits. These self portraits have a heightened theatricality – giving a contemporary twist to traditional portraiture, and recalling the work of Mapplethorpe and Blossfeldt. Anoushka has had solo shows in London, New York and Paris.
