Allan D'Arcangelo was born in Buffalo, NY and educated at the University of Buffalo, he later studied in Mexico City. His first solo show in New York, at the Fischbach Gallery in 1963, earned him a place in the first generation of Pop artists. Allan D'Arcangelo is best known for his paintings of the highway, which he began in 1963.
Early in his career he made a name for himself as part of the Pop movement, with works such as Marilyn and Madonna and Child. However, as the highway paintings evolved, they moved away from Pop art. D'Arcangelo's paintings became much more abstracted and the most interesting part of his paintings is the contrasts by expert use of color tones and shadows which points up spatial relationships.
He exhibited regularly in Europe and New York throughout the 1960's. His selected exhibitions include Museum of Modern Art, NY, The Institute for Contemporary Art, London, Musee d'Art Moderne, Paris, and Neuberger Museum, NY. In 1964, he was commissioned to paint the mural for the Transportation and Travel Pavilion at the New York World's Fair. Starting with the Fair, he executed numerous mural commissions, as well as received fifteen awards including a 1987-88 Guggenheim Fellowship. His works are included in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, DC, among many others, and in private collections worldwide.
