Ali Miller

Ali Miller’s work is fundamentally an amalgamation of personal experiences, family history, religion and identity and also the relationship between the individual to the material.

Memory for Ali Miller is a source of euphoric inspiration and a Pandora’s Box of the more remote qualities of human nature. Whilst her work might signify a nostalgic reminiscence of years past, it also carries with it the weight of pressures and experience of real life. Miller has drawn from the obstacles placed before her in life an extraordinary desire to express and comprehend them, and memories are what she believes shapes her life and art, first and foremost.

Her collages are nostalgic for a recent history to which we can all relate; traditional English wallpaper, 70s’ line drawings and other magazine cuttings that remind us of the home, family events and celebrations. The images are treated with careful thought, bringing together objects taken from the Ali Miller’s family home to create finished artwork that translates the past into the present as a moment in time. She presents this work to the viewer as an aesthetic composition enriched by the use of different textures, material and patterns, thus creating an expression of Ali Miller’s design perspective and interest in family history − an unusual combination, but one that succeeds in creating artwork of remarkable intimacy and harmonious composition.

Ali Miller’s vision and understanding of the world around her and the cycle of life and death is often depicted through the use of insects and skulls that reappear in her work, symbolising the very precious nature of our existence.

Ali Miller grew up in London and completed her Art Foundation at Camberwell College of Art before going on to Brighton University where she gained a BA (Hons) degree in Fine Art/Sculpture in 2003.

Ali Miller has exhibited widely since graduating, with recent exhibitions and art fairs in London, New York, Chicago, Miami and Paris. Exhibitions of particular note include Brave Soldier and Black Butterfly; a solo exhibition at Liberty of London and an exhibition at Skylark, the artist-run gallery at the Oxo Tower on London’s South Bank. Achievements include a tea set collection she created for Paul Smith, and a greeting card collection for Liberty of London. Her work has appeared in Company magazine, The Independent on Sunday and Elle Decoration.
